Engagement season is upon us! I LOVE hearing the stories of holiday proposals – rings wrapped under the tree or proposals among the Christmas lights. There’s something truly romantic about the winter, despite the chilly temperatures. If you’re planning a winter engagement session to celebrate, here’s a few quick tips on what to wear.
Clothing
This is kind of obvious… but a winter engagement session is going to be chilly (Duh!). This is your chance to choose warm, cozy clothing if that’s your style. And while it’s tempting to pile on the layers and hope for the best, think about the warm outfits you like AND look best on you. I highly recommend wearing your favorite sweater with a cozy scarf and cute hat. Use your warm accessories to add to your outfit while keeping warm, too. The last thing we want is you shivering during your session!
Shoe Choices
Dependent on where your session is, you may want to consider a pair of shoes that you can walk in and another for your portraits. This is a great way to keep your feet warm without having to worry about snow, ice, or street muck under your heels or favorite shoes. I’m more than happy to give you a moment to change shoes. And, if we’re hiking or going into the woods at all, definitely bring your boots!! Before your photos, you’ll have time to change into your favorite cute winter shoes.
Colors
Finally, when thinking about winter sessions, picking colors can be a little tricky. To me, the perfect colors for a winter engagement session are deeper jewel tones like navy blue, dark purples, deep burgundy, or even great neutrals like grays, camel, and rust. I tend to avoid anything too bright. As always, coordinate your colors instead of matching outfits 100%. It will ensure that you and your significant other will complement each other and add great composition to your photos.
Blankets & Scarves
Winter sessions also allow room for props like cozy blankets or big scarves are totally acceptable! Not only can you cuddle on or in them, but they can be placed on your lap while you’re sitting or be wrapped around you during some other portraits. Bring a cozy blanket you love and we’ll be able to easily work it into your session! And, even if you don’t want them in your images… bring a blanket anyway! It’s a great option to wrap around yourself while we walk between locations and help you warm back up between shots!!
ONE FINAL THING. Winter engagement session outfits don’t have to be boring and hidden under your coats. Choose your outfits carefully – think about YOUR style and what you LOVE about the winter and incorporate it. Whether it’s a dress you know you will look AMAZING in or a favorite scarf, a cute hat that you want to bring along. There’s nothing wrong with looking your elevated best!
