What to look for in a Wedding Photographer and questions to ask

Filed under:

One of the hardest parts of getting married is choosing all of your wedding vendors. Each vendor is a piece of the puzzle that is your wedding day and all of us want to be sure we’re a good fit before we’re booked. When you’re choosing a wedding photographer, there’s lots of questions to ask about packages, pricing, and availability. There’s lot of important questions to ask though beyond those obvious ones too! If you’re looking at wedding photographers, let’s talk about some things to think about and some questions to make sure you ask any potential photographers!

The Top 2 Things to look for

  1. Making sure your personalities mesh well! I believe that this is THE MOST important thing when choosing your wedding photographer. They are going to be with you pretty much your entire wedding day; your third wheel, the one you will spend more time with on your wedding day than you would with your future spouse (SERIOUSLY!). Trust me when I say that you’ll want to be sure you like the person capturing this day for you and that you get along really well. The last thing you want is to have someone who will be a wet blanket for you or someone who is WAYY too high energy for you that you get annoyed with them in the first 30 minutes. I do my very best to get to know all of my couples before their wedding day and so many of my couples turn into friends that it makes the day that much smoother. Plus, you’ll be more yourself on your wedding day and more comfortable in front of the camera if you’re comfortable with the person you choose based on their personality!

  2. Style – The next most important thing and equally important as their personality should be their style and aesthetic. These are portraits you’re going to hang in your home, place into albums, and share for many, many years to come (and possibly with future generations!). Be sure you choose a photographer whose style and aesthetic you truly LOVE and want to see displayed around you on a daily basis.

Of course those two things aren’t the only things you’ll want to dive in with photographers as you start connecting with them. As you’re gathering information from photographers, here are a few ideas on other questions you can ask:

  • Who will be shooting my wedding, the owner of the studio or an associate? (If it’s an associate you’ll want to make sure you can talk to them)

  • How long have you been photographing weddings?

  • How did you get started in wedding photography?

  • Is an engagement session included in your package?

  • Do you provide rehearsal dinner coverage?

  • Do you offer albums or prints?

  • What do you do to backup images?

  • What if an emergency arises and you can no longer make it to our wedding?

  • How do payments work (i.e. how much up front, when is the balance due)?

  • Do you charge travel fees?

  • Do you shoot with a second shooter?

  • Does your camera have a dual slot?

  • Will our photos be published after the wedding, and if yes, where?

  • Do you have insurance?

Don’t be afraid to ask your potential photographer any question you can think of! We all want to take care of our couples and make you feel comfortable about booking with us. We absolutely LOVE the chance to talk with you about our processes and your wedding day, so don’t be afraid to send those emails and ask those questions on those calls with us!
