The Importance of Wedding Detail Photos: What They Are and Why They Matter

Wedding detail photos are so much more than just photographing the “pretty” elements from your day against a solid background. These photos truly add so much to your wedding story.

Wedding detail photos preserve and convey all the thought and care that went into choosing those small, sentimental items that reflect you and your values. The intention behind choosing which details should be part of your wedding day is such an intimate choice that should be thoughtfully captured.

Keep reading to discover more about what wedding detail photos are and why they matter!

What Are Wedding Detail Photos?

Wedding detail photos capture the small, meaningful elements and significant items from your day, and they will tell the whole story of your wedding day, even if your wedding isn’t over-the-top or ultra luxurious.

These detail photos typically include images featuring your rings, invitation suite, shoes, florals, heirlooms, and accessories. Remember, even simple elements can be styled to feel thoughtful and meaningful.

Why Should You Get Wedding Detail Photos?

Your wedding will have so many different chapters, each telling a different part of your and your partner’s story, and your wedding details are the heart and soul of your celebration. These detail shots capture the little things that make your day uniquely yours.  When you look back, these intimate details will make your day feel special all over again.

Leading up to your wedding, you’re going to be organizing everything down to the very last detail, from what perfume or cologne to wear, to your wedding stamps, to your cake toppers. These small details matter just as much as the big moments on the day of your celebration, and they deserve to be preserved through beautiful photos.

What Items Should Be a Part of Your Wedding Detail Photos?

Here are some details to include in your photos – remember this isn’t a complete list but just a starting point:

Your rings

Pop into a jewelry store and get your ring cleaned so it’s EXTRA sparkly before your wedding!

Invitation suite

Be sure to bring your invitation suite with you to tell a cohesive story of your wedding day—I always recommend bringing two copies of your invitations. You can also bring along envelopes, stamps, ribbons, and wax seals if you have them.

I never skip photographing a wedding invitation suite because these beautiful invitations were the first impression your guests had of your upcoming celebration, and so much time, thought, and care went into the design. Those intentional touches should be preserved in photographs.

Accessories

Don’t forget the accessories! These include your earrings, necklaces, watch, hairpieces, ties, cufflinks, etc.

Additional items to bring:

  • Your signature perfume or cologne
  • Family heirlooms
  • Statement shoes
  • Ceremony program, menu, or any other printed pieces that are a part of your day
  • Blooms from your floral arrangements/ bouquet
  • Cake toppers
  • Suit
  • Tie
  • Custom ring boxes
  • Veil
  • Wedding dress
  • Vow books
  • Handwritten letters

At the end of the day, what’s most important is to bring along the items that mean the most and feel the most like you – you don’t have to bring everything that I’ve mentioned above!

Your wedding detail photos can be as unique as you want them to be – they don’t have to fit within a box or follow a checklist.

When Are Wedding Detail Photos Taken?

It’s no secret that I love shooting wedding detail photos the morning of the wedding to start getting creative. I’ll get started as soon as I arrive for your wedding —typically while you’re getting ready.

Pro tip: A little prep and organization go a long way! If you want to make the most of your wedding morning and photograph all those dreamy detail shots you’re envisioning, gather your special items before your photographer arrives so you can skip the last-minute scramble.

This step will save you so much time and let you stay fully present with your friends and family. You can also loop in your wedding planner or a trusted friend to help get everything for your wedding detail photos ready (and so you don’t forget anything).

Additional Wedding Detail Photos

All of the below are larger detail photos that your wedding photographer can take. It’s best to ask your wedding photographer before your celebration whether these types of photos are included in the wedding gallery, as each photographer offers something different!

Your venue, ceremony, and reception spaces

Your venue photos are a significant part of your wedding day, and your location helps tell your entire wedding story. This includes photographing your ceremony and reception space before your wedding guests arrive.

If you do want location photos, tell your photographer beforehand and be sure to make room in your wedding timeline so they can photograph everything before anyone else arrives.
