How to get comfortable in front of the camera

Filed under:

When I get to know my incredible couples, one of the biggest concerns I hear from them is that they’re not used to being in front of the camera or are “awkward”. Since most of us aren’t supermodels, it’s no surprise that this is a common and TOTALLY normal fear before any photo session or wedding day. But, I want my couples to know that I’m here for you. And I get it. I don’t always love being in front of a camera either. Over the years as a wedding photographer, I’ve learned a few tricks to help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. So as you’re preparing for your session, take a look through this list and take a deep breath in! It’s going to be okay – and even more than that, I promise it will be fun!

“Act naturally”

There’s nothing quite as frustrating as hearing someone tell you to “act natural” and it’s so hard to do with a camera right next to you. Don’t worry about posing yourself for me. With a mix of simple posing and prompts, we’ll create natural moments that will allow me to capture YOU just as you are on any other day you’re not with me. I always want my clients to feel that their portraits show the real them, so I encourage you to just relax and when in doubt, look at your significant other and start focusing on all the things you LOVE about them.

Share your insecurities

Before our session, I want you to tell me if there’s something you’re concerned about. Whether it’s a physical feature or not. I’ll do everything I can to make sure you’re comfortable and we’re putting whatever you love about yourself (and your partner) as a priority to capture. During your session, your photographer always wants you to feel confident and comfortable, so knowing what makes you insecure helps us!

Dress confidently.

Choosing your outfits for an engagement session can be tricky. My most important tip? Dress in what makes you feel great! If you’re spending our session adjusting your shirt or your dress (or those brand new shoes!), you won’t be comfortable and confident. You’ll be focused on something other than your partner, and that’s no fun! Instead, wear an outfit you love and are comfortable in so you can truly relax and enjoy the moment.

Final Thoughts

Being in front of the camera feels scary at first, but with a little practice and some confidence, it can be really fun. Portrait sessions are meant to celebrate something important and capture a special moment – so take a deep breath and remember why we’re here. And if all else fails, I promise to tell some really awful jokes and get some laughs out of you that way!

Begin Here

Your love is unlike anyone else’s, and it deserves to be captured with care, intention, and creativity. If you’re ready for an experience as meaningful as the memories we’ll preserve, I’d be honored to document your story.
