I frequently hear “We’re really awkward in front of the camera’“ or “We don’t have that many pictures of JUST us so we don’t really know what to do.” I get it. I truly do! I get our family photos done each year and I can honestly say that I go through the same level of anxiousness that you do. There’s NO QUESTION I feel more comfortable behind the camera than in front.
But one of the things I’m good at (at least, I’d like to think so!) is that I’m able to work with all my couples and families so that they are able to really showcase their natural relationship with each other, to allow me to capture it I do my best to get to know them in advance; talk to them on the phone, zoom, or engage with them on social so that by the time we meet in person, we truly feel like long lost friends. I aim to capture my couples in a way that feels more organic and relaxed versus a traditional posed shot; place your hand on their shoulder, hold hands, smile and walk this way…etc. I provide different prompts for my couples and families to talk about or act out so that they can truly engage in the natural way that they interact with each other.
