Believe it or not, one of the most common questions that I get from couples (and potential clients) is if they REALLY need an engagement session. It seems like a part of wedding packages that could possibly get cut ifToday, I want to share about why I believe all couples should have an engagement session. At the end of the day, it’s totally up to you and your photographer to make the decision that’s best for you. But, here’s the argument for having one.
Get to know your photographer.
First and foremost, engagement sessions are one of the first times that you’re going to get to meet and be with your wedding photographer (especially in the age of Zoom meetings). Not only do you get to spend time talking with your photographer but you’re going to get more familiar with their shooting style. And, you’ll probably get to use some poses that you’ll see again on your wedding day! All of that comes together to make you and your fiancé more comfortable on the day of your wedding. You’re not meeting a total stranger while you’re getting into your wedding dress or about to walk down the aisle.
Photos to use for wedding events.
A more practical reason to consider an engagement session is that you’ll be receiving a gallery of images you can use throughout wedding planning on save the dates, invitations, or just to put on a wedding website. These images will be professional quality (not just the iPhone snap in the bright sun from when you got engaged) and help preserve this time in your life. Plus, who doesn’t love new photos with the person you love? For many couples, it’s the first time they have professional photos together and that’s a huge milestone in itself!
Celebrate all of the planning you’re doing!
Let’s get real for a second: wedding planning is stressful! Take the evening to truly BE together and celebrate for a minute during your engagement session. Make it an evening out – you’re already going to be dressed up! Have a date night, relax at home together afterwards, or just simply enjoy the time together with nothing else to focus on. Your engagement portraits are about celebrating this special time in your life. So do just that.
Final Thoughts
Whether or not you decide to have an engagement session is 100% up to you! But I really believe that the benefits of these portrait sessions are important. And seriously, just the fact that you’ll get beautiful portraits of you two together is reason enough!
