Things to keep in mind when choosing your wedding venue

Filed under:

One of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is choosing WHERE you’ll be getting married and celebrating with your loved ones. There’s so many incredible venues in the New York City and Capital Region and honestly, I love so many of them. When it comes to choosing your venue, there’s always a lot to think about – even beyond the obvious points like pricing and location. Here’s three things you should keep in mind when you’re choosing your wedding venue from a photographer’s perspective!

Outdoor Opportunities

Determine what the outdoor spaces are like at the venue you’re thinking of. Are there gardens, rooftops, or just the sidewalk outfront? Look at those spaces and decide if you could imagine your portraits being taken there. While I’ll always search for the best light, I want to incorporate as much of your venue as possible – and those spots you loved!

Natural Lighting Indoors

There are some truly beautiful indoor locations in the city for couples to tie the knot (and get ready!). When you’re considering indoor spaces, look for places with lots of natural light. This will create the most organic lighting options for your special day. This tip is especially important when you think about getting ready spaces. I always opt for anything with a large window and clean backdrops for those special moments the morning of your wedding.

Accessibility

During a wedding day, there’s a LOT of people being photographed. From your bridal party to your grandparents, make sure the places you’re planning to have portraits done are accessible to all. The last thing you want to happen is for someone with mobility issues to be unable to make it to the gorgeous wall you picked out for family portraits. And think beyond mobility issues – be sure to confirm the spaces you love in the venue CAN be accessed on a wedding day, or what the procedure might be if not.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding venue will set the tone for most of your wedding day, so choose one that you love and can envision yourself celebrating in. Once you’ve selected your venue, talk with your photographer and they can help you determine some of the best portrait locations there or nearby to capture your portraits. And, if you’re looking for ideas on where to tie the knot, I’m always happy to help you narrow down your options! You know where to reach me!
