On this special day I wanted to showcase our servicemen and women. More specifically, my son’s great grandfather. A WWII vet and someone that is near and dear to my heart. While some in our family know him for his Christmas day speeches, Sunday dinners, sleeping on the couch during football games, and giving my husband a historical war book to read every time he sees him, I’m so glad I have this post to share a bit more of his time in WWII.
Louis Trunko was in the Air Force from 3/22/1943 thru 3/3/1946. After his training at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas, he spent most of his time as an Air Craft Specialist at Biak Island which dominates the entrance to Geelvink Bay, near the western end of New Guinea. He was also in the Philippines and Iwo Jima. At the end of the war he spent 3 months in Tokyo, Japan overseeing a group of Japanese men involved in post war cleanup of the areas that were bombed.
We will never know what these brave men (like Great Grandpa Trunko) and women have seen or done to fight for our freedom, but I am so grateful to them for all their years of service. I was lucky enough to take a few candids of him while we were home this last weekend. We are so lucky to call him family!
And of course, behind every great man, there is an even greater woman. Happy 66th Wedding Anniversary!
